{"id":83,"date":"2011-10-17T04:15:08","date_gmt":"2011-10-17T04:15:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/courses.haigarmen.com\/isma205\/?p=83"},"modified":"2011-10-17T04:15:08","modified_gmt":"2011-10-17T04:15:08","slug":"publishing-to-the-web-ftp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/courses.haigarmen.com\/isma205\/publishing-to-the-web-ftp\/","title":{"rendered":"Publishing to the Web (FTP)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s thrilling to finally publish your work to the web, imagine the whole world can now view it.\u00a0 For most beginners, the step of uploading that content to your hosting server\u00a0seems to involve some magic.\u00a0 Don\u2019t worry, this step is incredibly easy, once you understand what\u2019s going on.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing you will need is your Emily Carr\u00a0<strong>FTP<\/strong>\u00a0login information.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>FTP<\/strong>\u00a0just stands for File Transfer Protocol.\u00a0 It\u2019s just how files are transferred over the internet.\u00a0 You don\u2019t need to know any more than that. The good news is it&#8217;s the same as your Emily Carr username and password.<\/p>\n<p>The FTP client program will allow you to connect to the FTP server on your web hosting account.\u00a0 Let me suggest some great, free FTP clients:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fetch<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 This program is what is installed on the Macs in the university and you can download a free 30 day trial <a href=\"http:\/\/fetchsoftworks.com\/fetch\/\">here<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>FileZilla<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 A great program with a great name.\u00a0 I know many people using this FTP program.\u00a0 It\u2019s easy to use, and multi-platform. <a href=\"http:\/\/filezilla-project.org\/download.php?type=client\" target=\"_blank\">Download here<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>CyberDuck<\/strong> &#8211; Here&#8217;s another free option for Os X and it looks like it will be available for Windows very soon too. <a href=\"http:\/\/cyberduck.ch\/\" target=\"_blank\">Download here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>A note about File Management<br \/>\n<\/strong>Typically, I&#8217;ve noticed that students are not very organized when it comes to managing their files. This can become a huge problem when it comes to publishing files to the web that are not in the right place. Because your html files link to other html files and images files they need to be moved together in the exact same file structure. That is why I suggest using my recommended file structure.
